I often hear people referring to their guardian angel or to someone else's in the sense of watching over them and keeping them from harm.
The term "angel" really means "messenger." The Bible refers to them as deliverers of sustenance or carriers of news. In the Old Testament we read of them delivering message after message from God to various people. In the New Testament we read of them delivering message after message from God to various people.
Such as Mary...
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. (Luke 1:31)
Cornelius, the centurion...
3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” 4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. 6 He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” (Acts 10:3-6)
Peter, the Apostle...
5 Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. 6 And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were keeping the prison. 7 Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands. 8 Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.” 9 So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. 11 And when Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.” (Acts 12:5-11 NKJV)
Angelic messengers appear a number of times in scripture. They serve to do God's bidding.
According to common belief God assigns everyone a Guardian Angel to watch over and protect them from harm. They quote Psalm 91:11...
For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. (Psalm 91:11)
We recently had three area men who went out fishing in a small boat, two drowned. Not too far from here three men were killed when their helicopter went into the trees. All over this world children have died from diseases and various conditions. Where were their guardian angels?
In Acts 6:7 to Acts 8:1 we read about the stoning of Stephen, a Spirit-filled servant of Christ, who told a council of prominent Jews that they were responsible for the death of Jesus who was with God.
54 When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. (Acts 7:54-57)
If ANYONE needed a guardian angel it was Stephen. Jesus was even STANDING and watching and no guardian angel came.
But Psalm 91:11 says what it says and God never lies...
For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. (Psalm 91:11)
We find the same guardian angel words verbatim in Matthew 4:6. Satan is using the words and applying them to Jesus in the wilderness temptations...
and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” (Matthew 4:6)
So we see Psalm 91:11 is a prophecy concerning Jesus and it is fulfilled in Matthew 4:6 and Luke 4:10.
9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’ 11 and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” (Luke 4:9-10)
God has set things in order back in the Creation that when certain things come together certain things happen. God does not need to tweak things to keep them going as He intended. It's God's Providence. Good things happen to good people. Bad things happen to good people. Good things happen to bad people. Bad things happen to bad people.
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust (Matthew 5:45)
