19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. 20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ 27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ” (Luke 16:19-31)
The Rich Man has left this life and found himself in unimaginable torment. The Bible doesn’t say what he did or did not do to end up there.
The Bible says far more about Hell than it does about Heaven. One cannot even slightly begin to imagine just how horrible torment can be, Matthew 25:41, Mark 9:42-47.
Hell torment has become kind of a taboo subject because no one really wants to hear about it much less discuss it. I have never been to a funeral where anyone went to hell. Everyone is in a better place, everyone is “resting in peace.”
Hell is a place prepared by God for those who have chosen to be separated from Him. Since man being in the image of God will never cease to exist, God, being pure righteousness cannot be in the presence of sin He has to put those who have taken on sin somewhere totally away from ANY part of Himself.
We learn several things from the mouth of Jesus about hell torment in the Luke 16 Rich Man & Lazarus narration...
The firey torment was so intense the Rich Man begged for the mere touch of a moistened finger on his tongue, verse 27.
The Bible refers to hell torment as an unquenchable, everlasting lake of fire where there is continual destruction without being consumed. Hell is unending torment.
But he is told that he had his good things in life but now he is without and cannot leave nor can anyone go there to help him because there is a great gulf fixed.
Yet he can see Abraham and Lazarus! Every good thing in one’s life will be remembered, the good things, the hug of a toddler, the taste of a good meal, will all become torment to those in torment and agonizingly be missed.
Everyone alive, no matter how evil they are, enjoy many of God’s blessings He has bestowed upon His Creation. When this life is over and one opens one’s eyes in Hell torment those blessing will be gone and sorely missed.
The passage seems to indicate those in torment will be able to see what goes on across the great gulf be able to see what is happening there, adding even more torment.
Those in torment will beg for those still living and will want someone to go back from the dead and keep them from coming there if they have any feelings at all for them. Abraham tells him they have Moses and the prophets and if one rose from the dead they still wouldn’t hear him.
Jesus rose from the dead as prophesied in scripture witnessed by many, evidenced by the scriptures and secular history and most refuse to hear Him.
Sin is ANY action against one’s fellow man, ANY action against one’s self or ANY action against God. Since man is a creation of God any action against man is an action against God.
There is a list of sins in Romans 1:18-31. It is not the only list found but everyone who can think is there. Verse 1:32 says those who practice such things are worthy of death, separation from God.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
All who sin are under the wrath of God destined for Hell torment.
God, through Jesus, by the Holy Spirit has provided salvation from the penalty of sin.
Nowhere in the New Testament after Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is there any example of anyone being saved by any form of a “sinner’s prayer” or verbally “calling on the name of the Lord. It does not exist no matter what anyone tells you.
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15-16)
Those who believe and obey the preached gospel will be saved, all others will be condemned.
7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8)
What is the gospel Jesus commanded to be preached that must be obeyed?
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)
How does one obey the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ according to the scriptures? One can die on the cross and be buried but one will not rise on the third day. Yet one must believe and obey the death, burial and resurrection of the gospel?
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. (Romans 6:3-7)
Make your salvation sure. If one has not obeyed the gospel by immersion in water for the remission of sins, one is still in their sins and in dire danger of Hell torment. Study for yourself, demand Book, chapter, and verse.
