In Genesis 3:1-24 we read of Adam and Eve's spiritual separation from God. He had given them very clear directions concerning the fruit of the Garden of Eden. They could eat every fruit that grew in the Garden but one. God told them they couldn't even touch this fruit because in the day that they did, they would surely die.
Satan came into the Garden and engaged Eve in conversation. "Didn't God say you could eat everything in the Garden?" Satan asked, if I may be allowed a little literary license here.
Eve replied, "Everything but the tree in the center of the Garden. God said we cannot eat or even touch it, lest we die."
"You'll not die," Satan scoffed, "God knows that if you eat it you shall become as gods knowing good and evil." In a few moments Eve was munching away. Not too long after that Eve gave some of the fruit to Adam and he ate also.
The chances are very good you have heard the story of Adam and Eve more times than you can remember. I'm sure you have even heard preachers and Sunday School teachers talk about Adam & Eve.
If I were to ask the average person on the street, and sadly, even most preachers, and avid Bible teachers and students, to name the fruit Eve gave Adam, they would quickly answer, "APPLE!!"
Know what? No where in the entire passage does the Bible mention an apple.
Why does it matter? Apple, orange, kumquat, what difference does it make?
If one can be so wrong about such a seemingly insignificant Biblical point such as the name of the fruit Eve gave Adam, what about other obviously significant points in God's word? Can one who is mistaken about such a simple point be trusted with the deeper points of God's word?
There are several passages that point out the importance of God's word:
"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4 (Underline mine.)
"And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." Revelation 22:19 (King James Version)
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (King James Version)
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15 (King James Version)
It is very important that we be sure the things we hear about God are from God and not from men. When we hear men say things that are not found in Scripture we have to be even more careful to compare their words to the Bible for accuracy.
"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." Acts 17:11 (King James Version)
If your religious guides or teachers are in error about the fruit Eve gave Adam, how trustworthy are they when it comes to how God wants people to live?
