The Lazarus Connection

There are only two men named Lazarus in Scripture.

One is the only person actually named in either a story or a parable told by Jesus, The Rich Man & Lazarus found in Luke 16...

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. (Luke 16:19-31 NKJV)

The Rich Man realized there was no escape for him from the torment he was in and he begged Abraham to send Lazarus to his father's house to warn his five brothers about the torment and keep them from joining him.

Abraham told him they had Moses and the prophets and if they wouldn't hear them they wouldn't hear one who rose from the dead.

Now then, we can read of the other Lazarus in John 11:1 to 12:11.

This Lazarus was personally known to Jesus. The passage said Jesus loved him. Jesus received word that Lazarus was very sick and he delayed for several days until after Lazarus died. Jesus arrived 4 days after Lazarus' death and entombment, "he stinketh!" Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead in the presence of Lazarus' sisters and his mourners.

Jesus' visited them after he had raised Lazarus from the dead...

9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. (John 12:9 NKJV)

A great many Jews came to see Jesus and Lazarus who Jesus had raised from the dead. The Jewish leaders plotted to put the one raised from the dead to death.

Here we see the words of Abraham to the Rich Man in hellfire torment in action...

27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”

Jesus rose from the dead and most do not hear him.

15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15-16)
