1, 2, 3, 4 Or More Gods?

"Dear Marv,

How are you? I've read your article at Google and I'm confused on the part "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.".. does it mean that there are 2 Gods?. God the Father and God the Son? because as far as I'm concerned. the bible said that we have only 1 God.

A friend of mine was the one who asked me this.. and so i am now.. also confused.. and also someone said to me that "God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit are the same?,, could you please give me your own awareness about this matter?.. it will be an honor for me to help my friend and myself too for this questions..

I hope that you'll pay attention to my e-mail.. I'm looking forward to your response..

Have a good day and God Bless.

Thanks for writing, it's good to hear from you.

Let's see if we can make any sense out of the confusion.

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2 NKJV)

In this passage we read that God Created the heavens and the earth. Notice also the passage says "the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." There are two distinct personalities mentioned in the account.

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:26-27 NKJV)

This passage says "Let Us make man in Our image." This tells us again, as in verse 1-2, there are at least two separate and distinct personalities involved in creation, God and the Spirit of God.

But the Bible also tells there was a third personality involved in the creation as well...

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (John 1:1-3 NKJV)

Who is the Word? Jesus.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14 NKJV)

Here is a passage where all three are obviously all in one place at the same time...

21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21-22 NKJV)

In this passage we have three separate distinct personalities. We have Jesus. We have the Holy Spirit descending in the bodily form of a dove. We have a voice coming from heaven.

It is very obvious in scripture that there are three distinct and separate persons in the "Godhead." We call this Godhead the "Trinity" or Three even though the word "Trinity," the word we use to describe the concept, is not found in reputable translations.

And there is also in New Testament scripture alone a number of verses that say there is "One God." (Mark 12:32, Acts 7:35, Romans 3:30, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Ephesians 4:6, 1 Timothy 2:5, James 2:19) The one you may remember best is Ephesians 4:6 "one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

The Bible does not contradict itself. The Bible verses say there are three personalities and there are Bible verses saying there is one God. How do we reconcile the verses so they agree?

For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. (1 John 5:7 NKJV)

These three personalities are in such harmony, in such complete agreement with each other that in essence they are one God and are all referred to in scripture individually as God. And they are referred to in scripture collectively as God.

I hope this has been helpful, if not, or you have other questions feel free to contact me.
